The Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary – Solemnity, Holyday of Obligation

Today is a Solemnity because The Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary is the patronal feast day of the United States of America.

This day celebrates the sinlessness of Mary from her conception. Her birthday is celebrated 9 months later, on September 8.

This is not the feast of Jesus’ conception – that is the Annunciation, which is celebrated March 25th, 9 months before his birth.
